Device messages
Seen an “Unknown Part” message? Your phone is fine.
If you have recently bought a refurbished iPhone you may spot an “Unknown Part” or “Important Display Message” notification in Settings. It sounds alarming. In almost every case it is an informational message from Apple’s software, not a fault with your device.

What is happening
Why the message appears
Many refurbished iPhones contain replacement components — a battery, screen or camera fitted during an earlier repair. Modern iPhones use software pairing to verify certain parts, and when a component has been replaced the device may show a notification even though the phone is working perfectly.
Every device we supply is professionally tested before sale against our ten-stage check. A handset with this notification is fully functional and covered by our warranty exactly like any other.
Even genuine Apple parts trigger it
This is the part most people find surprising. The notification is about whether a component has been paired through Apple’s systems, not about the quality or origin of the part. A genuine Apple component fitted outside Apple’s own pairing process can produce exactly the same message.
Questions
Unknown Part message explained
What is the Unknown Part message on my iPhone?
A notification Apple displays on certain iPhone models when a component such as the screen, battery or camera has been replaced and has not been paired to Apple’s systems. It does not necessarily indicate a fault with the device.
Does it mean my device is faulty?
No. It is not a fault. It is a notification from Apple indicating that a component has been replaced, or cannot be verified by Apple’s software.
Will it affect performance?
In most cases, no. The device continues to function normally and all major features operate as expected. The message is informational rather than a fault warning.
Why does Apple display this message?
Apple uses software pairing between certain components and the device motherboard. When a component is replaced, the software may display a notification if the new part has not been paired through Apple’s systems.
Can the message be removed?
Most notifications disappear on their own, usually within five to seven days. Some remain visible within Settings. Either way, the presence of the message does not affect normal use of the device.
Do genuine Apple parts still show the message?
Yes. Depending on the model and the repair process, even genuine Apple parts can trigger the notification if they were not paired through Apple’s software systems.
Do you sell devices with Unknown Part messages?
Sometimes, yes — and we would rather say so plainly. We resell used and recycled devices, some of which have had a previous repair, which is what produces the message. Every one is fully tested before sale and covered by our warranty.
Are these devices still covered by warranty?
Yes. Devices supplied by Used Phones 4 U remain covered by our warranty regardless of whether an Unknown Part notification is present, provided the warranty terms are met.
