Buying guide

Which refurbished iPhone should you actually buy?

For most UK buyers it comes down to two things: how long you plan to keep the phone, and whether you want Lightning or USB-C. This guide works through the models people compare most, what to check before you buy, and where the real differences sit.

Quick answer

The short version, by budget

Six models cover almost every buyer. Here is where each one makes sense.

From the bench

Technician tip

If lowest cost matters most, start with the iPhone 11 or 12. If battery life and long-term value matter more, the iPhone 13 is usually the safest choice. If you want USB-C, compare the 15 and 16 before deciding — the gap between them is smaller than the price difference suggests.

Every refurbished iPhone we sell is tested, securely wiped, graded and supplied with an 18-month warranty. You can also cut the cost of upgrading by trading in your old handset through Sell Your Tech.

What “refurbished” should mean

A refurbished iPhone is a pre-owned Apple device professionally tested, inspected, securely wiped and approved for resale. The real difference from a private sale is the preparation: tested before sale, clearly graded, and covered by a warranty. Without those three, it is just a second-hand phone with a nicer word attached.

Six things worth checking

Look at what affects everyday reliability, not just the headline price.

Side by side

Prices vary by storage, grade, colour and current stock, so treat this as buying guidance rather than a price list.

For the best balance of price, battery life and everyday performance, the iPhone 13 is often the safest all-round choice. If USB-C is the priority, start by comparing the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16.

Questions

Quick refurbished iPhone questions

Which refurbished iPhone is best value?

For most UK buyers, the iPhone 13. It balances price, battery life and everyday performance better than anything either side of it — A15 Bionic, OLED display, and iOS 26 support.

Does the refurbished iPhone 11 support iOS 26?

Yes. The iPhone 11 runs iOS 26 and modern App Store apps. It remains 4G-only, and some newer device-specific features are unavailable on it.

Why choose the iPhone 15 over the iPhone 14?

The 15 if you want USB-C, Dynamic Island and the 48MP camera. The 14 if you want to keep your Lightning accessories and spend less overall.

Is refurbished the same as second-hand?

No. A second-hand phone is sold as-is. A refurbished phone has been tested, graded, wiped and covered by a warranty before resale.

Trading up

What to do with your old phone

If you are upgrading from an older iPhone or another device, trading it in reduces the cost of the new one. Our Sell Your Tech service takes the old handset rather than leaving it in a drawer losing value every month.

Particularly worth doing if you are moving from an iPhone 11, 12 or 13 into something newer — those models still hold real resale value.

The wider picture

Why refurbished iPhones sell well in the UK

Lower cost than new. Long software support across most iPhone models. Less electronic waste through a longer device lifespan. Access to premium Apple hardware at a fraction of retail. Warranty cover and real testing when bought properly.

The deciding factor is the seller: one that explains its testing, grading, battery standards and warranty, rather than competing on price alone.
